Compared to Firefox, Safari and Chrome, this site looks really bad in IE. Why is that?

After some further testing, it appears that when using Internet Explorer 8, it is best to view this site in Compatibility Mode so that the navigation tabs appear properly.
Testing in Internet Explorer 7 yielded satistfactory results.

The short answer is that IE sucks.
The longer answer is that we've made every attempt to code this using W3C standard HTML and CSS. The problem is that IE is by far the least standards compliant browser out there.
Having said that, considering that IE has 60% of the desktop browser market share out there, we had to make a tough choice.
We opted to code to web standards, and then build a custom IE CSS to accommodate the CSS incompatibilities with IE. We're hoping that IE9 will be more standards compliant, but clearly we're not holding our breath.
We're also hoping that by the time we build the second iteration of this site, we'll be close to pixel perfection in IE.
Since Microsoft isn't shooting for a 100% result in the ACID3 test, don't expect much from IE9.
