OpenId is an open standard for authenticating people to web sites. More simply, OpenId is a widely used way of logging into a site with an already existing user id and password.

The reason why OpenId was selected was that most people have an OpenId, whether they know it or not. There's a good probability that you've got a Google, Yahoo or AOL account. All three of them are OpenId providers. Our graphical login interface should make it quite easy for you to log in to this site.

Another reason for using OpenId was that it eliminated the need for you to remember yet another password. We don't keep a password on file for you either, which makes it nicer from a security perspective too.

When you log into a site like Braintapper Exchange using OpenId, you're redirected to the site of your OpenId provider. If you're already logged in, your provider simply redirects you back to our site with a message telling Brinatpper Exchange that you are who you say you are. If you're not logged in, you'll be asked to enter your user id and password at your provider's site, and subsequently redirected back to Braintapper Exchange.

If we find your OpenId URL in our database, then we will simply log you in. If not, we'll ask you for a couple of bits of information - your e-mail address (which we don't share) and a nickname. That's it. We don't barrage you with an annoying survey or block visibility to the site with advertising overlays like other sites (one that rhymes with IT Foolbox rings a bell).
