Because this site is targeted at business intelligence professionals, it was a design choice to use an editor that was less WYSIWYG and more powerful. Braintapper Exchange uses the WMD editor, which uses the Markdown markup language. An update to this question. The current version Braintapper Exchange, which is a LAMP application is probably going to be open sourced at some point in time. Any future incarnations of the Exchange will likely be on a different platform and remain closed source.
